Sales and marketing

Sales and marketing is a big part of our Pharmaceuticals and Vaccines businesses.

Essentially, its role is to commercialize our products. That could mean bringing vaccines to protect people against diseases, marketing our medicines or identifying new research and development opportunities.

Sales and marketing is an exciting, evolving area. We’re constantly looking to drive business improvement, deliver greater value to patients and accelerate our growth. The work can also be extremely diverse. Many of our commercial activities involve liaising with governments, regulatory and health authorities.

Our portfolio includes both established brands and newer, innovative medicines. We’re proud of our products. We therefore give our customer-facing professionals in-depth science training to present our medicines and vaccines properly and reward them for their ability to build relationships with the healthcare industry. By putting the interests of patients first, we make sales and marketing an extremely rewarding career option.

Do I have the right qualities?

We believe in accountability, empowering our people and creating a pipeline of future managers and leaders. So we need passionate people who can think strategically, act with integrity and live according to our values and behaviours. You should be commercially savvy, ideally with a medical/science interest and an excellent ability to build relationships. A focus on performance and the ability to react to market change are also important. At a senior level, we need people who can create a vision for positive change and inspire others.

Manufacturing and supply

Our global manufacturing and supply (GMS) teams are responsible for making and shipping the products that help people do more, feel better, live longer.

We have more than 30,000 people in GMS, across 70 sites in 33 countries. Together, these people help to produce 4 billion packs of medicine and nearly 900 million doses of vaccines every year.

It’s an exciting time to join GMS. We are developing a diversified, global business and are growing the scale of our manufacturing operations. The opportunities to grow and develop could be open to you too.

You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re delivering the medicines and healthcare products that millions of patients and customers rely on every day. You’ll help us create innovative manufacturing and supply chain solutions that keep us at the forefront of our industry. This means making sure that products are manufactured as efficiently as possible and meet the strictest quality standards.

Do I have the right qualities?

We look for people who appreciate the importance of safety and quality and strive to continuously improve our performance and practices. We work in an open and transparent environment, so you’ll be someone who treats others with respect and integrity – as you will be treated yourself. You should also be able to bring commercial insight and work across functions, businesses and geographic boundaries.

This enables them to focus on developing, manufacturing and delivering medicines and vaccines to the patients who need them.

We provide a range of speciality expertise, including Audit and Assurance; Communications and Government Affairs; Information Technology; Indirect Procurement; Corporate Strategy and Development; Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability; Finance; Global Ethics and Compliance; Global Learning and Development; Human Resources; Legal and others.

Do I have the right qualities?

Our aim is to operate increasingly as an integrated group in order to be a more connected, consistent and effective partner to the business. We are looking at professionals who will provide high-quality support services that are attuned to the needs of the business, and strategic counsel that drives performance. Our work serves to protect and enhance GSK’s reputation. You should be attuned towards working with transparency and providing visibility of our services and costs. To ensure service governance across GSK and create consistency in terms of processes, tools and structures, we have set up Customer Boards in all businesses. The Customer Boards review our service delivery (quality of service, financial performance and customer satisfaction) and check it is meeting their needs.

Research and development

Patient-focused research and development is central to our work.

Our scientists are looking to find treatments to address respiratory illnesses, viral and bacterial infections, diabetes, cancer and HIV/AIDS.

We employ thousands of scientists in many different areas, from China to the USA, India to the UK. Every role is different – but our research teams are united by one thing: a dedication to help patients and consumers.

There are not many jobs where your day-to-day work could directly lead to an outcome that product that will improve the lives of others. At GSK, that is our aim and it means there’s a real sense of purpose in R&D. We innovate and apply the latest knowledge and thinking to our work. Our culture is entrepreneurial.

We’re constantly learning about emerging areas of science. We focus on the best science and generate clear plans to find out if that science can lead to new treatments. Our people are given opportunities to learn by taking on new scientific projects, jobs or experiences and working with experts in their fields.

We give our scientists responsibility, and their achievements are recognised and rewarded.

So if you want to make a difference to society and grow your career in the most innovative and exciting area of science, now’s the time to join us.

Do I have the right qualities?

We want people who are passionate about improving lives through scientific innovation: those who combine scientific or medical expertise with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Whatever your field of scientific or medical expertise, you must be prepared to keep learning and evolving.

Developing our people

We attract and retain the most talented people by investing in training and development tailored to their needs and building on their strengths. And, through our approach to leadership development, our managers learn how to motivate team members to perform at their best.

At GSK we value both deep expertise and broad knowledge and experience. We believe career paths should be flexible and adaptable to meet the future needs of our business and the strengths and aspirations of our employees. To us, career development is about building experience and capability and is not defined solely by promotion and advancement.

Learning opportunities

We believe some experiences contribute more to learning and growth than others. By focusing on these opportunities in a planned way, we can help your professional development. We view learning in the following way:

  • On-the-job experiences – Around 70% of our learning and development is gained through on-the-job experiences. Regular reviews with your manager will help identify where you can develop by increasing the scope of your role or by taking on new projects. As part of your ongoing development process, you will agree development objectives with your manager, which will help you achieve your full potential.
  • Developmental relationships – Developmental relationships form around 20% of our learning and development. In GSK we encourage opportunities for you to get support and feedback through coaching, mentoring and feedback from your manager and peers.
  • Formal development – Approximately 10% of our learning and development isgained through formal development – for example, e-learning, coursework, classroom-style training, articles or books. We provide online performance support, self-assessment tools and resources to help you develop.

To help you get the most from your development in GSK, we expect your manager to work with you to identify areas of focus for your development – and support you in achieving your performance and development objectives.

Individual support

As a fundamental part of your career development in GSK, you’ll have regular, open and honest performance and development planning discussions with your manager. These conversations will focus on your aspirations, skills, experience and development needs. We are committed to giving you the support you need to help you to deliver your best performance and benefit from personal growth within our business.

Varied career paths

It’s important to remember careers may take many different directions and flexibility is essential. Playing to your strengths and motivations and meeting the needs of our business are critical for our combined success.

Career development is all about building your experience and capability levels for the future. Ultimately, careers are built on sustained delivery of results, acts of leadership and displaying our GSK values.

Your contribution, skill development and passion will contribute significantly to your career at GSK.

Inclusion and Diversity

We are an equal opportunity employer and have people from diverse backgrounds in our workforce. We are building a talent pipeline that includes people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and they are given an equal opportunity to grow and develop within the organisation.

We aim to create an inclusive workplace to attract and retain the most talented people from all backgrounds and cultures. We focus on creating an inclusive organisation where all employees feel engaged and know that their work makes an important contribution towards the progress of the company. An inclusive environment welcomes different knowledge, perspectives, experiences and working styles from across our global population. This not only enhances individual creativity and innovation, but makes good business sense. We also try to ensure that we understand the needs of people with disabilities when defining job roles suitable for them.

Gender diversity

We are focused on enabling gender diversity all across the organisation. We have introduced several interventions and policy enablers to encourage gender diversity in sales, management and senior roles.

GSK has always been committed to gender diversity in the workplace. Successive studies have shown that having a diverse organisation, at all levels, is good for business as this brings better quality decisions through diversity of thought, experience and style and a more balance approach to risk.

To underpin our continued focus on diversity and more specifically to develop a leadership pipeline of women, GSK India has launched the ‘Women’s Leadership Board’. Reena Ved, Chairperson of the Board said, “Our aim is to provide a safe working environment to women, supported by organisational policies, in order to better engage women and develop their careers so that they can break perceptions of any glass ceiling. We are confident that we will deliver results and develop more women talent across all levels.”
